Scholarship overview
Established in 1993, the James M. Wooten Scholarship is the cornerstone of TMBA's leadership development efforts. Each year, four outstanding professionals are selected as Wooten Scholars and awarded tuition to MBA's Future Leaders Program.

About MBA's Future Leaders Program
Wooten Scholars participate in MBA's prestigious Future Leaders Program — a three-part executive series focused on leadership, advocacy, and business strategy, culminating in capstone presentations and graduation at MBA's Annual Convention.

Aligned with MBA's National Advocacy Conference.
- Session 2Washington, DC
Includes a day at the Lincoln Leadership Institute (Gettysburg, PA).
- Session 3Chicago, IL
Capstone presentations and graduation at MBA Annual Convention & Expo.
Eligibility
- • 4–6+ years of real estate finance experience (more is welcome)
- • Full-time employee of a TMBA or MBA member firm (Regular or Associate)
- • Demonstrated commitment to the industry through excellence & achievement
- • Recommendations: president/CEO (or equivalent) required; additional letters encouraged
Wooten Scholars are encouraged to share insights from the MBA program with the Texas community and to volunteer at the state level.
James M. Wooten legacy
A pioneer and mentor in U.S. mortgage banking, James M. Wooten led Lomas & Nettleton Financial Corp., served as Texas MBA President (1982) and MBA President (1983), and exemplified innovation, integrity, and generosity. TMBA renamed the scholarship in his honor in 1997.
